Water

Inadequate public water sources is one of the many problems of barangay Doña Josefa. Currently, there are only 7 artesian wells, 8 deep wells, and 3 springs in the barangay. The ratio of these aforementioned water sources to the number of households are 1:42, 1:8, and 1:3 respectively. Moreover, some of these public water sources dry up during summer. Thus, the group, together with the community people, aims to increase the number of public water sources in barangay Doña Josefa by the end of 2022. to achieve this objective, the group and the community came up with specific objectives and strategies. The first specific objective is to improve existing public water sources. Second is to provide additional public water sources in each sector. And the third specific objective is to increase the knowledge of the community on proper water storage.

Health Center

The groups second identified problem concerns the function of the health center, emphasizing the lack of available health services. Some of the cues gathered are the following; inadequate medical supplies, improper recording system, and lack of basic emergency response system. Because of these supporting evidences, the group aims to achieve the general objective for the problem which is “To increase availability of health care services offered by the barangay health station by the year 2020.” This will be achieved through different strategies like increasing the knowledge of responsible personnel about the problem, improving the recording system through trainings of health personnel, improving the infrastructure of the health center and increasing the number of its medical supplies and helping in providing an overall improvement on the quality of health services.

The medical students genrally aims to reduce the rate of malnutrition from 45% to 5% by the year 2022. To achieve this, several objectives and strategies will be implemented in the community. Hypertension

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hypertension causes 7 million deaths every year while 1.5 billion people suffer due to its complications. According to the Philippine Society of Hypertension (PSH) in 2012, 21 percent of Filipino adults are hypertensive.

In Brgy. Dona Josefa, there is a small percentage of individuals who are continuing to experience elevated blood pressures but do not seek consultation is steadily rising. So in order to mitigate the existing issues on hypertension, the team has decided on these specific objectives to  implement the National Recording System in the Barangay Health Station, to increase the availability of medical supplies in the Barangay Health Station, to increase the knowledge and skills of Barangay Health Personnel on basic emergency management and to improve the Barangay Health Station and Wellness Center infrastructure.

Waste Management

In a municipality enforced by an ordinance for strict observance of proper solid waste management and “no plastic policy”, one must ideally think that the enforcing area may not have a problem with waste management at all. Despite the commendable effort coming from the local government unit, this isn’t the case that happens in Barangay Doña Josefa, situated at the northernmost part of the Sindangan Municipality.

The Barangay Doña Josefa is divided into four (4) puroks, each purok owns a solitary Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for their waste disposal, which is mainly found along the road. The placement of the MRF already creates a struggle on the residents of Doña Josefa residing on the upland or higher grounds of the barangay. Furthermore, garbage deposit into the MRF and collection by the municipality dump truck only happens once in a month, on the 28th in particular. Moreover, the dump truck fails to collect the waste left in the MRF, causing it to be displaced outside the collecting chamber and be spread along the road.

Through the house-to-house survey conducted, it has been revealed that 43% of the households practice burning of biodegradable wastes, which has been strongly opposed by the local government. More so, of the non-biodegradable wastes, burning, burying and being thrown anywhere are the methods used by the households which contribute further to the cluttered surroundings within the barangay.

Considering the existing circumstances for solid waste management, we aim to increase to 95% households practicing proper solid waste segregation by the year 2020. Strategies include to achieve this objective is to conduct seminar or re-orientation on waste segregation, methods of effective disposal, and the ordinance affecting solid waste management. Likewise, to mobilize the residents further, a proposal of creating a purok committee for sanitation shall be created which will be given the responsibility to monitor and ensure residents on their jurisdiction practice proper waste management and ascertain cleanliness within their residential perimeters and visible areas. A plan to also increase the number of available MRFs shall also be proposed to the LGU to ensure efficient accommodation of all the solid wastes of the barangay, as a whole.

Sanitation remains to be an important determinant of health, not only on an individual level but by the community as a whole. If everyone commits to sanitation as a communal responsibility, then a healthier community may be achieved.
